Drew Fleming - 103# State Champion
At the Section 2AA Individual Wrestling Tournament in Delano, three wrestler’s from Mayer Lutheran High School earned placement honors in three different weight classes. These Mayer Lutheran High School wrestlers are part of a co-op program with Watertown High School.
Freshman Joey Standick who was previous ranked #6 @ 112# in AA, decided to bump up a weight class to compete in the 119# division and finished an impressive 6th place. Many outsiders view the 119# weight division as one of the toughest, with several top ranked wrestlers competing in it. Standick finished the weekend with an impressive 3-3 record, with three extreme close loses.
Freshman Matt White competed in the 140# division and finished with a 3-2 record. He earned 5th place honors in the division.
Sophomore Drew Fleming, who is currently ranked #3 @ 103# in AA won the section 2AA 103# division. Drew finished the weekend with a 4-0 record and advanced to the State High School Tournament at the X-cel Energy center, where he won all of his matches to earn the state championship.
At a national folkstyle wrestling event which took place at the UNI-Dome at the University of Northern Iowa, over 2,300 wrestlers from across the United States took part. Drew Fleming took second place in the 112# weight class Junior Division and as a finalist, Drew earned a spot on the USA Wrestling National Team. He will train/compete with other National Team Members at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
