Rationale
The World Language Department (Spanish) emphasizes a Christian study and perspective of other cultures. It also helps students develop proficiency in reading, listening, speaking and writing in other languages. Students will gain insight into their own culture and learn about their native language. While studying a different language and many different cultures. By taking Spanish, students will also develop communication skills that could benefit them in their travel to other countries. An emphasis on grammar and usage helps to prepare students for the opportunity to test out of beginning college language courses.
Goals of the Department
The students will:
1. Gain insight into the Spanish culture and people.
2. Acquire skills necessary for successful travel in Spanish speaking countries.
3. Develop proficiency in reading, listening, speaking, and writing in another language
4. Acquire knowledge about their own language and its origins
5. Be prepared for post-secondary world language education
Department Goal Achievement Strategies
1. Reading from texts, celebration of holidays, presentations and projects in each class
will help students gain insight into the culture of the people being studied.
2. Role playing, practice situations, listening comprehension exercises, and practical units
concerning world travel will help students acquire skills necessary for successful travel.
3. Proficiency in reading, listening, writing, and speaking will be developed through classroom
exercised, assignments, and evaluative testing.
4. Through grammar instruction and a recognition of cognates, students will be able to
acquire knowledge about their own language’s origins.
5. Through critical evaluation, practice exercises, and classroom instruction, students will have
the opportunity to be prepared for further instruction, including post-secondary education.
